Apartment contents insurance

You need to get contents insurance through a broker...and it is advisable that you get liability insurance as well as contents coverage. It is relatively inexpensive and protects you if a guest/visitor becomes injured and sues you after falling on your kitchen floor — you are in America now!

Two big insurance companies in America are:

Food Shopping

All supermarkets (e.g., Food Emporium, D’Agostino, Whole Foods) deliver: the supermarket will typically add a $1:00-2:00 delivery fee to the bill, but you should also tip the delivery person $3-5 for their efforts. For bulk purchases, however, you are best off taking a car and going out of town to Stew Leonard’s, an experience unto itself and significantly cheaper than in-town prices, or shopping at FreshDirect, which will deliver to your door.

New Yorkers also rely on the 24-hour Korean grocery stores that dot most neighborhoods, for fresh groceries, flowers and last minute purchases of just about any item at any just about any time of the day or night.

Household Goods

Shops for pots and pans, lamps, DIY, those essential plasma screens and the like:

Doctors

There is no more fluffy NHS—it is all pay as you go here!!! So rule number one: make sure you have health insurance!!! Rule number two: check the percentage of the treatment cost your health insurance is going to pay beforehand. The reimbursement rates from insurance companies (mostly referred to as “HMOs”) are more complex than the tax code.

One thing to pay attention to: most HMOs have a substantially different rate of reimbursement for “in-network” doctors than for “out-of-network” doctors—and quite often you will find that the best specialists are out-of-network. Moreover, even for in-network service beyond a regular visit to the GP, you will often need a referral from your GP, and you will generally need advance approval for surgery. Be safe: make sure you are covered before your visit to the doctor or surgeon.

There are thousands of doctors in NYC, it is hard to know where to start so a recommendation is a great help, and in some cases vital. Ask your friends and colleagues about the doctors they use, and be prepared to change GPs a few times until you find the right one for you.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Ladies—no more seeing the nurse at the local GP—if you need oral contraception you need to see a Gynaecologist—fun!
